Singapore
Climate
Really hot, all year round. Expected for a place so close to the equator but still hot. I visited a few times but always in the dry season. There is also a rain season which is hot and wet.
The hot weather led to the development of many climate-controlled malls.
Food
I mostly ate in food courts. They have a lot of choice (always good but especially when travelling with kids), quality is good and prices are very reasonable.
Urbanism
Lots of things to like:
- lots of green and lush tropical vegetation all over the city. The plan to make Singapore a "garden city" is great and successful;
- high density buildings seem to be the standard housing style. Kind of inevitable for a city-state with the second highest population density of the world;
Things that could be improved:
- more mixed use buildings. There are huge malls and neighbourhoods with endless blocks of high density housing but nothing much in between;
- while car usage is not particularly encouraged (cars are heavily taxed) there is a lot of car centric infrastructure with wide, multi-lanes roads;
Transport
Public transport is good. I’ve used both the MRT and buses to get around. Trains and buses are very clean, people very polite and always give up their seat when they see parents with small children. Fares are fairly cheap.
Attractions
- Merlion fountain. Obligatory tourist picture location. As such it’s very likely overcrowded and probably overrated.
- Marina Bay Sands. The architecture is really cool and worth a walk around the area.
- Gardens by the bay. My favourite attraction of the city.
- Sentosa. I didn’t spend time at the resort and its attraction except for the beach, which is really nice. Although the claim of it being the the southernmost point of continental Asia is up for debate.
- Changi Airport. Usually airports don’t make lists like this.
